I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about the Topeka Junior Blues Special Olympics program of which I am honored to be the Local Program Coordinator, coach and parent of an athlete.
The Topeka Junior Blues Special Olympics team offers year round sports training, education and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic type sports for children and adults with mental handicaps. Special Olympics Kansas offers twenty-one sports and our athletes train and compete in about ten of these sports. We have anywhere from four athletes to 80 athletes of all ages competing in various sports throughout the year. It is up to the athlete what sports they choose to participate in. If you look up above and to the right of our logo you can see some of the sports we are able to offer our athletes.
One of the great things about Special Olympics is the fact that any athlete regardless of ability can successfully compete in Special Olympics year round. The competition is broken into skill levels so athletes can compete successfully with other athletes of the same abilities. It is a wonderful opportunity, to be the best they can be in an atmosphere of kindness and support.
Although our focus centers around sports, it is much more than that. The Topeka Jr. Blues attempt to give every opportunity for our athletes to win at whatever level they can. It is not always about winning medals, but in giving the athletes the chance to be the best they can and have a good time doing it. If our athletes are doing the best they can, and are having a good time, they win.
The Topeka Junior Blues is a non-profit organization run entirely by parents, brothers, sisters, teachers, students and friends. They are the finest most dedicated, and talented group of folks that any organization would be the envy of. This group spends countless hours coaching, training, transporting, resourcing, organizing, fundraising and doing whatever it takes to keep the Topeka Jr Blues running. They are every bit a part of our outstanding and growing organization.
We invite you to take a look around our site, view the pictures, see what we are truly about and be a part of our special world.
Thank you,
Mike Molter
